"The mark of a good leader is not authority, but the ability to inspire others to grow."

The Benefit

Leading from a position of authority can create unwilling and resentful followers. People follow you because the chain of command obligates them to. Once that chain is broken, they're nowhere to be seen.

But if you develop the instant leadership ability to facilitate and not dictate, growth in others, your leadership influence extends beyond an org chart and reporting line.

An effective and covert way to do this is to model it. Specifically what I call extra-mile leadership.

Extra-mile leadership is where your actions stand out. Among others. And even compared to what you normally do.

In a meeting, it's where you invite someone else to speak first when it's normally you.

It's where you increase your interest in the thoughts and opinions of those around you, increasing your curiosity and genuinely seeking to understand others.

It's sending messages of acknowledgement that you noticed a particular moment of genius or standout behaviour.

It's exhibiting leadership. And a little bit more. So others notice. And get inspired.

The Challenge

Over the next week, identify where you can demonstrate extra-mile leadership. Raise the bar, and bring others along with you.
